666 vs. 333

Nothing of great importance here, though it is something that has always bothered me. In Revelations, where the number 666 got its popularity from is taken from the following passage:

Revelation 13:11-18
Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. It had two horns like those of a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence; and it makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, the one whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 It performs great miracles, even causing fire to come down from heaven onto the earth as people watch. 14 It deceives the people living on earth by the miracles it is allowed to perform in the presence of the beast, and it tells them to make an image honoring the beast that was struck by the sword but came alive again. 15 It was allowed to put breath into the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could even speak; and it was allowed to cause anyone who would not worship the image of the beast to be put to death. 16 Also it forces everyone — great and small, rich and poor, free and slave — to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead 17 preventing anyone from buying or selling unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This is where wisdom is needed; those who understand should count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person, and its number is 666.

Or..

Revelation 13:11-18
King James Version (KJV)

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

So, I will just gloss over other phrases that strike me as important that deserve looking into like how the KJV says “to receive a mark IN their right hand, or IN their foreheads” rather than “on” as in the new Complete Jewish version. That should probably be looked into to see what the original text actually says.

I will also ignore that the beast is described as having “two horns like those of a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon” as that would get me lost on my ponderings of feathered serpents imparting wisdom to man in many ancient cultures and recent discoveries that many dinosaurs were possibly feathered.

The number is actually named in the final scripture. It says, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

Interestingly, even in a lot of esoterica there is a great importance put on one third and two thirds and triangles. In addition to this, the internet is aflutter with 333 and its meaning when one seems unable to “escape” noticing the number. Maybe because of these things, I always seen the two numbers, 666 and 333, as representations of 33.3% and 66.6%.

Interestingly, in the story of the fall, Isaiah and Revelations imply that one third of the angels fell from Heaven. As much of the Bible is symbolic and quite mathematical, I have always wondered why 666 is aligned with this beast in revelations when 333 would seem a more appropriate number to associate with them.

These are some of the weird things that just randomly puzzle me and I have no idea why. They just pop into my head and never go away as there is no way to definitively know the answer or why I decided to wonder about it anyway considering I am not even a religious person per se.

EDIT: I just re-read the CJB version and have come to the realization, how is this not a dead on description of the Catholic Church?
